News for 1/22

January is almost half way over! It has been a busy and fun month. We have learned a lot and are looking forward to finishing the month strong!

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade had a great time learning about angles this week. We solidified our understanding of acute, obtuse, and right angles. We then began working on measuring angles. The students enjoyed completing their angle hunt and then creating digital collages of what they found.

4th Grade-
Fourth graders spent the first part of the week working on a measurement conversion circus project.  Students converted units of weight, volume, and length that all pertain to parts of the circus.  They thought about everything from the weights of animals to how much popcorn to buy for the concession stand!  We ended the week by playing a conversion game with a deck of cards.  Ask your student to play with you at home!

5th Grade-

5th graders continued with our Personal Financial Literacy unit. We took a close look at budgeting this week by studying assets, liabilities, income and expenses.  This was a great introduction to next week's in depth budgeting project. Stay tuned for more information on next week's blog to learn about what they're doing!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
First graders started our ISP this week!  We recorded some due dates in our planners, and started brainstorming ideas for topics.  Be on the lookout for an email regarding what topics your student is choosing between!

2nd Grade-
Second grade is enjoying their novel study of "The Unlucky Lottery Winner of Classroom 13". We are identifying the big idea from each chapter, generating a visual image from the chapter, and jotting down something interesting. It's a real page turner and they can't seem to put it down! We also launched our spring ISP projects and began brainstorming topic ideas.

3rd Grade-
Third grade launched their spring ISP projects this week. The students began brainstorming ideas that they are interested in researching. We are also finishing up our novel study of "Rump".

4th Grade-
Fourth grade has launched their spring ISP and have begun collecting ideas for potential research topics. They are also finishing up their novel playing cards. They are excited for the tournament in February!

5th Grade-
Fifth grade launched their spring ISP projects this week. They are working on brainstorming research topic ideas. They are also finishing up the scripts for their novel study. It's been a busy week!

News for 1/15

What a week it has been! We are glad that everyone was safe and warm on Tuesday and were really excited to see the kids on Wednesday. We also had a great time at STEAM Night last night. Thanks so much everyone! It was so much fun!

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade began their unit on geometry this week. We've had a great time exploring angles. We started the unit with an online Laser Challenge. Be sure to ask your students about this! Today we went on an angle hunt and are excited to create some digital representations of types of angles.

4th Grade-
Fourth graders continued our work with angles this week.  We discovered that every triangle contains angles measuring 180 degrees, and used that knowledge to discover the measurements of angles in quadrilaterals and beyond!  We also classified triangles by their angles and their sides. We ended the week by writing their names on graph paper and measuring each angle created.  We also identified the adjacent, complementary and supplementary angles in their names.

5th Grade-

Fifth graders continued with our Personal Financial Literacy unit.  We explored the world of credit scores and reports, learning all about how making payments on time, applying for loans and not paying fines affect credit scores.  We also made a book on paying for college.  We spent two days researching the cost of tuition at various colleges and universities and discovering ways to pay for those years of education!  Your child is bringing their book home today.  Ask them what they learned- we had quite a discussion, and all learned a lot!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
First graders spent our short week exploring.  We used our Logic Links kit on Monday, and solved logic puzzles using colored plastic disks.Thursday and Friday, we created art using one and two digit numbers.  Check SeeSaw for your child's project!

2nd Grade-
Second grade did a great job finishing up their projects and essays this week. We are excited to start a novel study next week!

3rd Grade-
Third grade will wrap up their "Rump" novel study in the next two weeks or so. We are also looking forward to talking about our spring ISP projects.

News for 1/9

Happy 2018!!
Welcome back everyone! We have hit the ground running and are off to a great start in 2018. We enjoyed a great break but we are so happy to see all of the smiling faces this week.

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade spent this week reviewing Stem and Leaf plots, Dot Plots, and Bar Graphs this week. We will wrap up our data analysis unit next week. Our next unit will be geometry! We are looking forward to starting off learning about angles.

4th Grade-
4th graders began a geometry unit this week.  We made our own protractors using squares of wax paper, but quickly figured out we needed something more accurate!  We have spent the rest of the week learning how to use a standard protractor by measuring lots of angles, including some on our desks made with tape!  They finished the week today by creating geometric art and including 12 different geometric items in their pictures.

5th Grade-

5th graders have jumped into the world of personal financial literacy.  We started by talking about different types of taxes- sales, payroll, federal and state.  We also spent a couple of days learning how to balance a simple budget, distinguishing between fixed and variable expenses.  Today, we discussed different methods of payment, and their pros and cons.  I've been very impressed at their knowledge of the financial world- these kids will be ready to manage money sooner rather than later!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
1st grade had a good week of exploring many different things!  We finished up our books on Eric Carle by completing the covers.  They will be on display at STEAM night next week!  We also practiced some coordinate graphing skills with a New Years project, explored with tangrams and talking about liking all of yourself by reading the book I Like Myself!.  It's been a fun week of getting back in the groove of school!

2nd Grade-
The students have been working on finishing their ISP essays this week. We also have been filming their videos for their green screen presentations. We are super excited to share everything with you at STEAM night next Thursday!
