News for 12/17

It has been a short but very busy week. We had a lot of fun and did a lot of learning in these three days. It has been a great first semester and we are looking forward to an awesome 2019!1st:

1st Grade Talent Development
First graders enjoyed a tea party this week to celebrate the end of our Mary Poppins unit.  We had so much fun decorating gingerbread people (ask your student why we chose gingerbread!), and drinking some lemonade.  We discussed our favorite parts of the book and movie, and all agreed we want to see the new movie that premiered this week.  We have had so much fun with this unit!

2nd Grade Talent Development
The second grade completed reading "A Bear Called Paddington" this week. We enjoyed our culminating activity of creating gingerbread book characters. The students had a great time!

3rd Grade Math
Third graders continued learning about data analysis this week.  We finished up bar graphs and spent the rest of the week wrapping up our ISP hotel projects.  They are almost done- we can't wait to show them off at STEAM night in January!

4th Grade Math
Fourth graders took a DCA this week over units 5 and 6- multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals.  Grades are in HAC.  We spent the rest of the week busily working on our ISP library projects.  They are close to being finished and we can't wait to show them off at STEAM night in January!

5th Grade Math
Fifth graders took a DCA this week over units 4 and 5- rates, ratios, percents, expressions and equations.  Grades are in HAC.   We spent the rest of the week busily working on our ISP artist projects.  They are close to being finished and we can't wait to show them off at STEAM night in January!

3rd Reading
Third grade completed their biography projects this week. They presented them to our class. They did a great job sharing their knowledge. We also wrapped up the week with some literary fun. The students created gingerbread book characters from our novel "Rump". They had a great time being creative with the cookies!

4th Reading
Fourth grade wrapped up the week with a little book fun. We created book characters using gingerbread. Each student had to create one of the characters from "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library". It was so fun to see how creative the students were with their cookies.

5th Reading
Fifth grade ended the semester with some great things. The first was taking the ekphrastic poetry they had written about the art in our school and going on the art hunt. They each got a copy of the booklet full of classmates' poetry and then had to figure out which piece of art was speaking through it. This project was inspired by our reading of "The Harlem Charade". They had a great time figuring out which poem went with which piece of art.

We also spent the last day having a little fun with book characters. The students created gingerbread book characters representing the characters in our novel "The Harlem Charade". It was so much fun to see the creativity!

Have a great winter break, see you next YEAR!

News for 12/10

December is in full swing. We have been so busy learning and having fun. We are looking forward to our last week together in 2018 next week.

1st Grade Talent Development
First graders have finished watching the Mary Poppins movie!  They loved it and we all enjoyed comparing the book to the movie.  They have almost finished researching London landmarks, and we will put our umbrellas together in January when we return to school.  Students made kite placemats in preparation for our tea party on Monday, 12/17.  We are looking forward to sharing some gingerbread cookies and lemonade together.

2nd Grade Talent Development
The second grade ISP projects are moving along. The train cars are turning out so great and the kids are loving putting them together. They are so excited and proud to showcase what they have learned about their cities. We are also looking forward to a fun culminating activity next week for our reading of "A Bear Called Paddington".

3rd Grade Math
Third graders have spent the week on data analysis.  We have discussed frequency tables, dot plots and bar graphs.  We made foldables in our journals to organize our learnings, completed a dot plot and a bar graph with the letters of our names, and filled the hallway with some bar graphs of our own.  Students have also been working on their ISPs- they are looking great!

4th Grade Math
Fourth graders have spent the week multiplying and dividing decimals.  They had done some practice with word problems, and ended the unit by creating a fun review project.  Each student made a 12 sided dodecahedron filled with their knowledge of decimals.  They will be in the hallway to see soon!  Students will take a DCA over units 5 and 6 Monday.

5th Grade Math
Fifth graders have wrapped up our unit on expressions and equations this week.  We learned the difference between the two, and practiced order of operations (PEMDAS).  Students will take a DCA over units 4 and 5 Monday.

3rd Reading
Third grade continued working on their biography presentations. The student's are sharing their knowledge through a "puppet" poster. The posters look amazing! They will "become" their famous person and share their learning with the group next week.

4th Reading
Fourth grade wrapped up their biography reports this week. We also worked on our culminating projects for our novel. We are looking forward to a fun end of unit activity next week.

5th Reading
Fifth grade had a great week. We had the pleasure of skyping with Natasha Tarpley, author of "The Harlem Charade". The students really enjoyed talking with her. She shared her inspiration for the book and answered our many questions. This week we also worked on our own ekphrastic poetry. We are excited to see if we can solve our own poetic art mystery here at school next week.

Have a great weekend, see you next week!

Welcome December! It is going to be a fun filled month. We are looking forward to lots of learning and a little winter fun along the way!

1st Grade Talent Development
First graders have spent the week watching the Mary Poppins movie, and making comparisons with the two book versions we read.  The movie is long, so it's taken a few days!  We are looking forward to talking about the differences and similarities we saw next week.  We are also working hard to get our research on London landmarks done.  They are all anxious to get their fun facts written on the umbrellas.  :-)

2nd Grade Talent Development
Second grade has been hard at work on their ISP projects. Most students are working on their train cars. They are compiling their research into a fun presentation. They can't wait to share them at STEAM night!

3rd Grade Math
Third graders wrapped up our unit on multiplication and division this week.  We learned how to do long division, and also thought about how to interpret remainders when we have them.  We took our DCA on Thursday- grades will be in HAC by Friday morning.  We spent Friday working on our ISP country research projects.  They are doing a great job!

4th Grade Math
Fourth graders finished up multiplication and division of fractions with a project on making blueprints for a house.  It was fun to talk about the fractions and how they made it difficult to think about building the house!  We moved on the multiplying and dividing with decimals next.  We took some notes and thought about some tips and tricks for making this easier.  Friday was an ISP day- they are doing great on their library projects!

5th Grade Math
Fifth graders have spent the week thinking about percents.  We have practiced a lot, with word problems, games, and completing some penant flags showing sale prices at the grocery store that we hung up with in the hallway.  We also started our next unit on expressions and equations.  Students have had fun working on a slide project using PEMDAS to fill in blank expressions to fulfill certain solutions.  Friday was ISP work day- we have quite a few artists among us!

3rd Reading
Third grade is working hard on their biography presentations. They have completed their research of a famous person and are now creating a poster to show what they know. These posters will be a fun, interactive way of sharing what they learned.

4th Reading
Fourth grade is finishing up their biography research this week. We have also been working hard on their culminating projects for "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library". It has been a great week of learning!

5th Reading
Fifth grade wrapped up their unit on poetry this week. We ended the week with a skype visit from a fellow poet who is also a counselor at Grisham Middle school. We learned some great tips about writing poetry as well as some new vocabulary! Be sure to ask your student about ekphrastic poetry. The students then took this knowledge and created poetry connected to the art found throughout CCE. We will be going on a hunt to connect the poetry to the art, much like our characters in "The Harlem Charade".

Have a great weekend, see you next week!
