News for 8/31

Welcome Back to TAG!
We have had a great first week in TAG. It has been so fun to see everyone again and to meet all of our new family members. We are off to a great start with our learning and are having fun too. We built our class social contracts and set our growth mindset goals for the year. It's going to be a great year!

1st Grade Talent Development
First graders have spent this week learning about the Depth and Complexity icons we use in TAG.  We have talked about 'Language of the Discipline', 'Details', 'Patterns' and 'Rules'.  Ask your kiddos what their favorite was!  It's been fun getting to see them every day.  :-)

2nd Grade Talent Development
Second grade is off to a great start. We have started our first novel "Lola Levine, Drama Queen" as a group read aloud. We are focusing on character traits and plot sequence. We also began learning about our Depth and Complexity Icons. We started with the Rules icon. We read "Tomorrow's Alphabet" by George Shannon and discussed the Rules that this book follows. We then implemented that rule and created our own version of the book. The kids did a great job coming up with their own pages. We will be turning our book into a video to share with you all, as well as reaching out to the author to share what he inspired in us.

We also got to visit with Mrs. Owen, the campus ITS, to learn about some of the awesome technology that is available to us on campus. The students brainstormed ideas for how to integrate technology into their learning and projects.

3rd Grade Math
Third grade has begun Unit 1: Place Value this week.  We have explored numbers up to the hundred thousands place with slideshows, some practice and games.  We ended the week by creating a place value park using numbers from our lives, including our addresses, phone numbers and birthdays.  We are having fun!

4th Grade Math
Fourth graders have jumped into Unit 1: Place Value.  We have explored whole numbers up to the hundred millions place and the thousandths place in decimals.  Students created number sliders and recorded their numbers in standard, written and expanded form.  We ended the week by playing place value yahtzee with a partner to make numbers with decimals.  It's been a great week!

5th Grade Math
Fifth graders spent the week exploring ratios.  We discussed using ratios in the real world and explored ratio relationships with Roddy the Robot in his town of Rodtown.  Students ended the week by exploring fractions, decimals and percents and how they relate to each other.  We will continue this concept next week.  They've done an amazing job of being on top of things, following directions, and showing leadership qualities in my class.  It's great to have them back!

3rd Reading
Third grade has had a great first week in TAG! We built our social contract through group collaboration. We also started with our first novel study unit by reading "The Great Shelby Holmes". We will be exploring fiction through the implementation of this novel. We will learn about elements of fiction, character interactions, and plot. We will also put ourselves in the characters shoes as we work to solve the mystery they are involved in. We also enjoyed a visit from Ms. Owen our campus ITS to share some technology that is available for us to use in projects. Today, they brainstormed ideas for how to integrate Spheros into our language arts learning. The students will have the ability to integrate technology in their projects throughout the year.

4th Reading
Fourth grade reading is moving along quiet well. We are continuing the whole grade level novel study of "Wonder". The students are digging deep to learn vocabulary, character traits, as well as points of view. Their insight and discoveries have been great to see. We ended the week with a technology lesson from our campus ITS, Mrs. Owen. Through this lesson students will be able to become familiar with technology available to them on campus. They will be able to integrate technology into projects and learning in our class. Today we explored the use of Spheros and will be partnering with another class on campus next month to share our learning. It's been a great first week in TAG!

5th Reading
Fifth grade had an excellent first week in ELA TAG. We established our social contract and began our first novel study. Our first novel is "Chasing Vermeer" by Blue Balliett. This is a mystery novel that incorporates art history as well. We will be examining the novel through the lenses of our Depth and Complexity icons. We will explore plot, character interactions, elements of fiction, and author's use of language. We also had the opportunity to end the week with a visit from Ms. Owen to introduce Spheros, one of the technology elements available to students on campus. I am looking forward to seeing the students develop and integrate technology in their learning this year.

Have a great weekend, see you next week!
