Third grade has been hard at work completing their Tiny House perimeter and area projects. We are very excited to have them out for display in the library beginning next Wednesday! We hope you can stop by to take a look!

4th Grade-
4th graders finished up our animal zoo area/perimeter projects and they will go in the hallway today.  Stop by and take a look!  Students also practiced calculating area, perimeter and volume using task cards in various places around the room, and played a fun area/perimeter game using dice and grid paper.  It's been a great week!

5th Grade-

Fifth graders spent the week working on our scale drawings of snack wrappers.  Some of them have finished, and they look great!  We will be displaying these in the hallway.  Those who haven't finished need to return their projects Monday 2/26/18.

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
First graders spent the short week working on our ISPs.  Each student has 3 topics and they worked on thinking of 3 questions for each topic.  Next week we will make our final choice for our topic and we will be ready to begin our projects.  Be on the lookout for an email with your child's choice of topic next week!

2nd Grade-
Second grade worked hard on their ISP projects this week. They began writing their research questions about their topic. They are also writing their own final chapters to the "Classroom 13" book we are reading.

3rd Grade-
Third grade had a great short week. They worked on their ISP projects and began working on developing their research questions.

4th Grade-
Fourth grade completed their Lemoncello Card Tournament! Our First Place winner was Natalie! We had a great time challenging each other. They have also been hard at work on their ISP project. They have narrowed their topic down and began brainstorming what they know and want to know about their chosen topic.

News for 2/12

Happy Valentine's week! We had a great week filled with learning and celebration. February is almost over and we are moving full steam into spring!

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade began their study of perimeter and area this week. They are learning through a hands on project. Each student has been tasked with designing a tiny house and then turning that design into a 3D creation. They must calculate the perimeter and area of each item included in their house. These houses will be on display in the library when completed.

4th Grade-
4th graders have spent the week creating animal zoos.  They were given requirements for the area and perimeter of their zoo and number of animals required.  They have really taken off with the project, and have been so creative in their use of space, naming exhibits and including "extras" in their zoo.  Finished projects will be up in the hall next week!

5th Grade-

5th graders have had a great week studying measurement conversions across systems and scale factors.  We have really solidified the idea that using proportions makes so much sense when converting and using scale factors.  Students have been excited to see how using a proportion makes it so much easier when multiplying and dividing tricky numbers!  We wrapped up the week with a preview of the snack wrapper scale factor project we will do next week. Students were given 1" squares from a mystery picture and transferred the picture to a 3" square sticky note.  They quickly figured out the picture was the 2018 Olympics logo, and enjoyed the process of finding the scale factor of 1:3 for the two pictures.  They are excited to start their own scale factor projects next week.  Don't forget to send in snack wrappers no bigger than 6" square!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
First graders spent the week doing various activities.  We spent two days in the library, working on finding books for our ISP topics.  All students have narrowed their choices down to three, and we are working on thinking of deep questions for these topics.  We also created a Valentine glyph heart about ourselves and studied the mascot of the 2018 Olympics, Soohorang.  It's been a great week filled with diverse learning topics!

2nd Grade-
Second grade has been hard at work seeking out resources for their ISP topics. They have also been completing their reading of "The Unlucky Lottery Winners of Classroom 13".

3rd Grade-
Third grade has been working hard on their ISP topics this week. However, we ended the week with a very special treat. The students were able to have a skype interview with Liesl Shurtliff, author of our novel "Rump". The students loved the surprise and had a great time asking fabulous questions!

4th Grade-
Fourth grade had a blast competing in their Lemoncello card tournament this week! The kids were engaged and used strategy to win their matches. We will continue the tournament when we return next week. Who will the champion be?!

5th Grade-
Fifth grade was hard at work on their ISP and think tank projects. Several students are coming close to completing their tasks. One student implemented her desalinization invention yesterday. She is hoping to see if she can remove the salt from water with her new invention.

Have a wonderful holiday break and see you next year!

News for 2/5

What a great week! There a has been a lot of learning and fun happening all around!

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade continued our geometry unit this week. We have been talking about polygons, attributes of quadrilaterals, and types of lines. We are looking forward to starting perimeter and area next week!

4th Grade-
4th graders have spent the week exploring perimeter, area and volume.  We have made 2D and 3D objects from various materials- square tiles, unifix cubes, and centimeter cubes.  We challenged ourselves with some problems from Math Olympiad to stretch our brains and ended the week by playing a Kahoot to test our skills.  Students also previewed instructions for a project to be completed next week.  Ask your child what the project is all about!

5th Grade-
5th graders have spent the week exploring measurement conversions within the same system, and scale factors, using proportions and unit rates.  We've spent a lot of time discussing when and where you might convert measurements in the real world, and practicing setting up proportions.  Students discovered that using proportions almost always guarantees your answer will be correct, and you won't choose the wrong operation to solve.
We ended the week by plotting points on a coordinate plane to make Roxy the dachsund, and creating her family members using different scale factors on other planes.  The students had fun discovering the scale factors used and naming the dachsunds!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
1st graders have had a great week!  We have done some work on our ISPs and students have all narrowed their list of research topics down from 6 ideas to three.  We also read the book Olympics by B.G. Hennessey, and discussed the 2018 Olympics in Pyeong Chang, South Korea.  Students were given a picture of the 2018 Olympics logo, and made puzzles from them.  We had fun putting them back together!

2nd Grade-
We have been busy narrowing down our research topics. We have been investigating available resources. Students are also working hard on completing their novel.

3rd Grade-
Third grade visited the library this week to hear a presentation from Mrs. Bamford. She talked with us about narrowing research topics and creditable resources. It was a very interesting lesson!

4th Grade-
We are so excited that our Lemoncello card tournament is happening Monday. This is the culminating activity to our novel unit. We have also been analyzing resources so that we can narrow down our ISP topics.

5th Grade-
Fifth grade has been hard at work browsing research resources and narrowing our ISP topics. They are also excited to wrap up their "Think Tank Thursday" projects next week.

Have a wonderful holiday break and see you next year!
