News for 10/23

What a week! We celebrated our school's 20th Anniversary, REFLECTED on making healthy choices through Red Ribbon Week, and filled our brains with new knowledge!

Announcement:
TAG Referral Parent Information Night
Canyon Creek will be hosting TAG Referral Information Night for families interested in referring their students for TAG testing. This night is designed for families of students not currently enrolled in the TAG program but are interested in testing. Please join us in the library on November 8th from 6:00-7:00pm for more information about how to complete the referral process.

Math:
3rd Grade-
This week we wrapped up our unit on Addition, Subtraction, Estimation and Rounding. We ended the unit with a checking account challenge activity that required students to track and compute deposits and withdraws in a checking account. We also reviewed place value problem solving with a Breakout Box challenge. The students had to work as a team to solve puzzles and riddles in order to discover clues. The clues allowed them to find the combinations to six locks that unlocked the Breakout Box and solved the mystery. We had a great time! This next week is our unit on Patterns in tables. We will be using rules and multiplication to identify and extend algebraic patterns in input/output tables.

4th Grade-
4th grade started the week by studying prime and composite numbers.  We created Frayer models to show our knowledge (parents, check your child's SeeSaw account to see theirs!) and completed a Sieve of Eratosthenes to solidify our learning.  Ask your child about Eratosthenes and the video we watched!  We ended the week learning about coordinate grids, ordered pairs of numbers, and the origin of a grid.  We engaged in some friendly games of Battleship to show what we learned!

5th Grade-
5th graders have had a busy week of adding and subtracting fractions.  We used Cuisenaire rods to model our math, and explored estimating our answers before solving.  Ask them about the Fact or Fib slideshow game we played!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:
**ISP supply note...the students have been creating materials lists for their ISP projects in class. Please know that we will be using found objects as much as possible. The students are not expected to purchase special supplies for these projects.

1st Grade-
We started the week with a math Connect Four game using dice to add and subtract numbers. It was a lot of fun! We've spent the rest of the week studying A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle.  We've read the story several times, and created crabs using our handprints.  We also tested out Mr. Carle's method of creating the illustrations for his books by layering tissue paper on our crabs' shells.

2nd Grade-
We had a great week in second grade! We explored some non-standard measurement math activities on Monday. On Tuesday, the students completed an addition  strategies tech challenge. We wrapped up our week by reading "Only One You" by Linda Kranz and are creating original fish artwork that will express words of wisdom to others around us.

3rd Grade-
The third graders enjoyed diving back in to our novel study of "Rump". They are working on reading critically and generating summaries. The third graders also helped prepare the time capsule for display during the 20th Anniversary celebration today. We ended the week with a building day for our ISP projects.

4th Grade-
4th grade was back at work on their novel study this week. They are creating character playing cards that include details of character traits and role in the plot. They will ultimately be creating an original game related to the book using their character cards.

5th Grade-
5th grade wrapped up their 20th Anniversary presentation this week. We shared it with the school at our assembly this morning. I am so proud of all of their hard work. They received so many compliments! We will link it here for you next week. The trailer is still linked below for viewing. We will begin our novel study of "The Mysterious Benedict Society" next week.

News for 10/16

It's been a great week in TAG! We've had a lot of fun and done a lot of learning!

Math:
3rd Grade-
3rd grade had a blast exploring addition and subtraction strategies this week. We used restaurant menus to create and figure orders. The students were challenged to keep their orders within a given range. We are also wrapping up a math project called Furnish a Hotel. The students were to select furnishings for a hotel with a minimum of 3 floors, 15 rooms on each floor and a combination of standard and suite rooms. They had to select the furniture and then figure the total cost of each item purchased along with the grand total for all furnishings of the hotel. They will share these projects in class.

4th Grade-
We started the week off by analyzing our mistakes on our recent DCA test.  Students corrected their work, and also thought about whether their mistakes were careless, conceptual or computation related.  The conversation was interesting, and we talked about how we can all stand to slow down some times.  :-)  4th graders also started a new unit on patterns and expressions.  We learned the acronym PEMDAS- ask your student what it means!  We had lots of practice solving expressions using task cards, some practice problems and a game.  It was a great week!

5th Grade-
5th graders started the week learning about plotting points in all four quadrants of the coordinate grid , using positive and negative numbers.  We took our DCA Tuesday, and reviewed our work Thursday.  Students analyzed their mistakes, and corrected their incorrect answers.  We are also working on an exciting project on the coordinate grid using their names.  Students are creating a picture of their names on the grid, recording the ordered pairs that make up their name, then asking a partner to use their clue sheet to create the original name picture.  It's been interesting to watch them working to think through the process!

We've had a short but busy and productive week in TAG. The students have been working hard and learning a lot!

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade is busy learning about rounding and estimation. We also have been exploring different strategies for addition and subtraction. Yesterday we practiced breaking down problems, looking for important information, and determining what we were solving for. We will continue exploring addition and subtraction problem solving strategies next week through some project based learning.

4th Grade-
We wrapped up Unit 2 this week with some division practice.  We learned how to interpret the remainder of a division problem, and categorized problems based on what happened to the remainder.  We will take our DCA (district common assessment) over place value, multiplication and division today in class.

5th Grade-
We spent some time studying integers this week.  We created an "elevator" to  study the floors of a store, and related them to positive and negative numbers.  We also studied addresses on a street and reviewed the types of numbers.  It's been a great week!

News for 10/2

It has been a busy and creative week in TAG! The students have used both their academic knowledge and creative brains to show their learning in a variety of ways. Be sure to check out your student's SeeSaw account to see all of the amazing things they have been doing.

Math:
3rd Grade-
We have completed our place value and decimal unit this week. We ended the unit with some amazing artwork as well as representing decimals in 9 different ways!! The students had a great time showing their thinking and being creative. We have also started our unit on Addition, Subtraction, Rounding and Estimation. We will be exploring different strategies for adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.

4th Grade-
4th graders jumped into the world of long division this week.  We started off by learning the rules of divisibility that showed the kids some shortcuts for how to figure out if a number is divisible by another number.  Ask your students to show you some of them!  We practiced some long division problems and will end the week with some division logic puzzles since they loved the multiplication one last week so much!

5th Grade-
5th graders started a new unit involving types of numbers.  We learned about natural, whole, integers and rational numbers by taking notes in our journals.  Students were then given the freedom to create a poster to solidify their learning about the types of numbers using any classification system they wanted.  Posters are on display outside Mrs. Hamilton's room, so stop by when you have a chance to check them out. The ideas and creativity are outstanding!  We ended the week today by exploring absolute value, and ordering integers on a number line.

ELA Enrichment & ISP:
**ISP supply note...the students have been creating materials lists for their ISP projects in class. Please know that we will be using found objects as much as possible. The students are not expected to purchase special supplies for these projects.

1st Grade-
We started the week with a math game of I Have/Who Has for numbers up to 20.  We've also spent some time working on our Eric Carle author study project.  We started a big art project that involves sequencing the story The Very Hungy Caterpillar.  We can't wait to show it off!

2nd Grade-
Second grade completed the reading of "Lola Levine, Drama Queen" this week. We enjoyed is so much that they wanted to recommend it to others. They are creating movie posters to advertise the book to our campus. They are integrating their favorite "scene" from the book as well as working on adding persuasive visual details to catch the eye of new readers.

They have also begun to research one of their dreams for their ISP project. We took a trip to the library to get books and have started collecting interesting information about our topic. They are very excited to share what they have learned!

3rd Grade-
We are well on our way with our reading of "Rump". As the students read they are creating chapter summaries. These summaries are being turned into matchbook flip booklets. These mini booklets will then be glued into a file folder creating a comprehensive collection of summaries that will tell the entire story of "Rump". I am also extremely excited to surprise the students with an amazing opportunity related to this book next semester!! Stayed tuned to find out what's in store!!

4th Grade-
4th grade is moving along in their reading of "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library". We have hunted for alliterations and journeyed with the characters as they come together for their adventure in the best library of all time! The students are taking notes on each chapter as well as creating character game cards. These cards detail the character's name, 3 traits, and their role in the story. We will be creating a card game using our character cards at the end of the story.

We were also super excited to receive an email from the author, Chris Grabenstein, the other day! We reached out to him to get information about a library hunt we want to complete at the end of our reading. The culmination of this book is going to be full of surprises and fun!

3rd & 4th Grade ISP-
Our ISP projects are moving along very well. The students have been focused on completing their research about one of their dreams. They are enjoying learning more and preparing to share what they have discovered. We are hoping to begin construction of our houses on the 18th!

5th Grade-
5th grade was very excited to have the opportunity to present their ideas for a special theme day to Mrs. Crawford. The students proposed some fun campus wide activities and decorations to help celebrate the school's 20th Anniversary. With the feedback from Mrs. Crawford the students are ready to move forward with finalizing some awesome ideas to share with our school.

Have a great weekend and see you next week!
