News for 10/16

It's been a great week in TAG! We've had a lot of fun and done a lot of learning!

Announcement:
TAG Referral Parent Information Night
Canyon Creek will be hosting TAG Referral Information Night for families interested in referring their students for TAG testing. This night is designed for families of students not currently enrolled in the TAG program but are interested in testing. Please join us in the library on November 8th from 6:00-7:00pm for more information about how to complete the referral process.

Math:
3rd Grade-
3rd grade had a blast exploring addition and subtraction strategies this week. We used restaurant menus to create and figure orders. The students were challenged to keep their orders within a given range. We are also wrapping up a math project called Furnish a Hotel. The students were to select furnishings for a hotel with a minimum of 3 floors, 15 rooms on each floor and a combination of standard and suite rooms. They had to select the furniture and then figure the total cost of each item purchased along with the grand total for all furnishings of the hotel. They will share these projects in class.

4th Grade-
We started the week off by analyzing our mistakes on our recent DCA test.  Students corrected their work, and also thought about whether their mistakes were careless, conceptual or computation related.  The conversation was interesting, and we talked about how we can all stand to slow down some times.  :-)  4th graders also started a new unit on patterns and expressions.  We learned the acronym PEMDAS- ask your student what it means!  We had lots of practice solving expressions using task cards, some practice problems and a game.  It was a great week!

5th Grade-
5th graders started the week learning about plotting points in all four quadrants of the coordinate grid , using positive and negative numbers.  We took our DCA Tuesday, and reviewed our work Thursday.  Students analyzed their mistakes, and corrected their incorrect answers.  We are also working on an exciting project on the coordinate grid using their names.  Students are creating a picture of their names on the grid, recording the ordered pairs that make up their name, then asking a partner to use their clue sheet to create the original name picture.  It's been interesting to watch them working to think through the process!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:
**ISP supply note...the students have been creating materials lists for their ISP projects in class. Please know that we will be using found objects as much as possible. The students are not expected to purchase special supplies for these projects.

1st Grade-
We had a great week!  For Math Monday, we played a dice game where we rolled two dice to make a number, then played Connect Four on a game board.  We also finished up our caterpillar projects, and will use some math next week to look closely at the parts of our project.  We are looking forward to starting a study on A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle next week.

2nd Grade-
Second grade is hard at work on their ISP research essays. We learned about introductions and conclusions this week. They have almost completed their writing and will be ready to begin building their rooms soon!

3rd Grade-
3rd grade is working hard on their ISP research essays. A few students have already begun building their houses and are doing a great job! We will return to our novel study of "Rump" next week in our Language Arts enrichment class.

4th Grade-
We have a lot of students building this week! The houses are in the beginning stages but the kids are very excited to put their plans into action. We will return to our novel study of "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library" next week in our Language Arts enrichment class.

5th Grade-
5th grade is hard at work to meet their October 27th deadline. The are so excited to share their creativity and hard work with the school and our guests. Their advertising trailer started running on the announcements this morning! You can view the trailer below. I am so proud of their work and we hope you enjoy!

Have a great weekend and see you next week!
