News for 10/23

What a week! We celebrated our school's 20th Anniversary, REFLECTED on making healthy choices through Red Ribbon Week, and filled our brains with new knowledge!

Announcement:
TAG Referral Parent Information Night
Canyon Creek will be hosting TAG Referral Information Night for families interested in referring their students for TAG testing. This night is designed for families of students not currently enrolled in the TAG program but are interested in testing. Please join us in the library on November 8th from 6:00-7:00pm for more information about how to complete the referral process.

Math:
3rd Grade-
This week we wrapped up our unit on Addition, Subtraction, Estimation and Rounding. We ended the unit with a checking account challenge activity that required students to track and compute deposits and withdraws in a checking account. We also reviewed place value problem solving with a Breakout Box challenge. The students had to work as a team to solve puzzles and riddles in order to discover clues. The clues allowed them to find the combinations to six locks that unlocked the Breakout Box and solved the mystery. We had a great time! This next week is our unit on Patterns in tables. We will be using rules and multiplication to identify and extend algebraic patterns in input/output tables.

4th Grade-
4th grade started the week by studying prime and composite numbers.  We created Frayer models to show our knowledge (parents, check your child's SeeSaw account to see theirs!) and completed a Sieve of Eratosthenes to solidify our learning.  Ask your child about Eratosthenes and the video we watched!  We ended the week learning about coordinate grids, ordered pairs of numbers, and the origin of a grid.  We engaged in some friendly games of Battleship to show what we learned!

5th Grade-
5th graders have had a busy week of adding and subtracting fractions.  We used Cuisenaire rods to model our math, and explored estimating our answers before solving.  Ask them about the Fact or Fib slideshow game we played!

ELA Enrichment & ISP:
**ISP supply note...the students have been creating materials lists for their ISP projects in class. Please know that we will be using found objects as much as possible. The students are not expected to purchase special supplies for these projects.

1st Grade-
We started the week with a math Connect Four game using dice to add and subtract numbers. It was a lot of fun! We've spent the rest of the week studying A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle.  We've read the story several times, and created crabs using our handprints.  We also tested out Mr. Carle's method of creating the illustrations for his books by layering tissue paper on our crabs' shells.

2nd Grade-
We had a great week in second grade! We explored some non-standard measurement math activities on Monday. On Tuesday, the students completed an addition  strategies tech challenge. We wrapped up our week by reading "Only One You" by Linda Kranz and are creating original fish artwork that will express words of wisdom to others around us.

3rd Grade-
The third graders enjoyed diving back in to our novel study of "Rump". They are working on reading critically and generating summaries. The third graders also helped prepare the time capsule for display during the 20th Anniversary celebration today. We ended the week with a building day for our ISP projects.

4th Grade-
4th grade was back at work on their novel study this week. They are creating character playing cards that include details of character traits and role in the plot. They will ultimately be creating an original game related to the book using their character cards.

5th Grade-
5th grade wrapped up their 20th Anniversary presentation this week. We shared it with the school at our assembly this morning. I am so proud of all of their hard work. They received so many compliments! We will link it here for you next week. The trailer is still linked below for viewing. We will begin our novel study of "The Mysterious Benedict Society" next week.

Have a great weekend and see you next week!
