News for 4/9

Another week of hard work at school. We are half way through April and are excited about what's ahead. Please be sure to mark your calendars for the District TAG ISP Showcase on May 10th at Westwood High School. We really hope to have all of our students there! Please see the link to the flyer below for information. We will also reach out to everyone as we get closer to coordinate the details.

Math:
3rd Grade-
Third grade is continuing their unit on measurement. We continued to work on liquid measurements of volume and capacity in metric and customary. We also worked on weight in ounces and pounds. The students had fun measuring real world items and solving a real world problem. They had to mail books to a friend but stay within the given weight parameters. They also competed in "Measurement Olympics" this week as well! It was fun to see them problem solve!

4th Grade-
Fourth graders have spent the week focusing on the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.  We started the week by exploring plotting points on the grid using humans as our points!  We had fun with it, and all were engaged in deep thinking about how plotting points works.  We have also explored placing points on the grid in between whole numbers.  It's been fun to see their brains stretch to think about decimals and fractions on the grid.  We ended the week with some coordinate practice playing Battleship.  Students enjoyed dueling each other to sink their ships on the grid using decimals.

5th Grade-

Fifth graders wrapped up our unit on data analysis this week.  We studied all kinds of data about our 44 U.S. Presidents, and created scatterplots, histograms, box plots and dot plots to show our findings.  This sparked some fun conversations about how data is related, and some times not related at all!  We ended the week with a DCA today.  Grades are in HAC.

ELA Enrichment & ISP:

1st Grade-
First graders have spent the week writing for the ISPs.  All students have an introduction written and are ready to write their paragraphs about the exciting things they have learned.  We also brainstormed ideas for their models to be done at home.  I can't wait to see all the creative things they make!

2nd Grade-
Second grade has been having fun solving some advanced Earth Day math problems. They are working hard to solve each problem. We will then create an Earth Day banner with their work.

3rd Grade-
Third graders started a new novel study this week. They will be reading "The Great Shelby Holmes". One of this year's Bluebonnet books. We are excited to see what will happen on this adventure!

4th Grade-
Fourth grade has been working hard on on their ISP research. Most students are well on their way to writing their research report.

5th Grade-
Fifth grade continued to work on their ISP research reports this week. We are working hard and most of the students are on to the writing process. They have learned so many interesting things during this project!

Have a great weekend, see you next week!
